We invite you to consider joining our Conservation Committee. You’ll serve alongside an inspiring crew of others supporting our mission to advocate and organize for cities where people and birds thrive.

Our Conservation Committee plays an important role in ensuring our organization has the resources and capacity necessary achieve our urban conservation goals, which include:

• • understanding and preventing bird-window collisions, including reducing artificial light at night;
  • reducing use of toxic rat poison; and
  • protecting and enhancing our urban forest.

This work requires multidisciplinary expertise. We encourage individuals from a variety of fields and perspectives to apply. Current members have identified experience with the following as highly desirable:

• • marketing and strategic communications;
  • video production;
  • architecture, construction, and development;
  • urban forestry and tree care;
  • environmental justice;
  • advocacy and lobbying; and
  • urban planning.

Here are just a few examples of how you can apply your specific skills to our urban conservation work:

• • Prepare/review organizational comments on project or policy proposals.
  • Deliver presentations to stakeholder groups on urban conservation priorities.
  • Develop communication materials such as one pagers, social media posts/graphics, or videos.
  • Assist with advocacy campaign planning and execution.
  • Participate in meetings with elected officials.
  • Provide testimony at public hearings.
  • Support opportunities for organization supporters to to participate in legislative process.

About Conservation Committee Service 

The Conservation Committee is a standing committee established in our organization’s bylaws. Its primary functions are:

1. To keep informed on governmental matters and private actions affecting the conservation of wildlife, plants, and their habitats.
2. To advise the Board of Directors and our members on its findings and/or act for the Board of Directors in presenting our organization’s views to agencies and individuals.
3. To identify potential organizational partners.

Meeting time and frequency: The Conservation Committee meets from 6-7:30 pm on the third Tuesday of each month via Zoom.

Time commitment: Committee members can expect to spend at least five hours each month on committee business.

Term length: Committee members are elected for a term of three years. A member may serve two terms, for a total of six years.

Committee composition: There are currently ten active committee members, plus a staff liaison. Expertise currently represented includes tree care, education, writing, urban ecology, climate policy, journalism, wildlife rescue, pest management, urban raptors, and more.
