Peck, Peck, Peck

Peck, Peck, Peck

Peck, Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins (ages 2 and up)

The story opens with a young European Middle-spotted Woodpecker (the author, Cousins, is English) having just learned to peck. His father bids him happy pecking and off goes the youngster on a comical and chaotic pecking trajectory. The book is meant to be read aloud, as the rhyming cadence syncs perfectly with the heavy-lined illustrations unfolding in increasingly outrageous fashion. The young woodpecker pecks his way through a house, through items like boots, cutlery and a closet of clothes. An added detail of the book are the actual holds punched through the cover and the pages.  The book appeals as both a visual and tactile read, and for the nerdy birder adult doing the reading, a fun exercise in Old World bird identification.
