The Earth Gives More

The Earth Gives More

The Earth Gives More, by Sue Fleiss. Illustrated by Christiane Engel (ages 2-7)

While the other books in this selection feature birds, this title focuses on several families and their interaction with the natural world around them. Rhyme and illustrations show the experience of a two parent family of color, a single mother, and a third family with a child in a wheel chair.  The book shares the changing of seasons, natural cycles like migration and hibernation and what nature does to repair herself from human impact. The families depicted care for their environment, but the reminder is that our relationship with Mother Nature is not balanced. Despite this more somber tone of the book, my 2-year-old daughter loved my reading it aloud to her, requesting it over and over.
